Have You Been Unintentionally Damaging Your Diet?

By Steven Purdy

Everybody knows that the most effective foods we can consume are whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats. These will be the foods that give us protein and also energy. They keep our bodies nutritionally balanced with minimal calories while we work hard to reduce our fat at the gym. Are you aware, however, that some of the foods you've been thinking are very good for your diet program could actually be making you retain weight? They could even be making you gain additional pounds! Here are a few of the foods which may be undermining your diet efforts.

Sports Drinks are not helping you at all. You have most likely been told that your sports drink is the best way to replenish your body's electrolyte levels after a workout. Most physicians agree, however, that if your exercise session is shorter than ninety minutes, drinking water should be fine. Sports drinks are full of sugar and calories and a large amount of other things you don't need like artificial flavors and colors which defeat any attempts at eating only natural products. Choose chocolate milk for your drink instead. Your body utilizes the sugar in the chocolate for muscle mass repair and everyone knows how good milk is for you.

Skip the protein shakes. So many people assume that consuming a protein shake is a good way to stop cravings when it isn't meal time. What you will be actually doing, particularly if the majority of your diet consists of whole and healthy foods, is helping your body overdose on protein. Contrary to popular thinking, protein does not get kept as muscle, it gets stored as fat. This means that should you have taken in an excessive amount of protein during the day your body stores what it doesn't need in your fat, which won't help you lose weight or inches at all.

Pre-packaged deli meat is just not nearly as healthy for you as you might believe that it is. You likely are convinced a sandwich that is produced from pre-packaged lean deli meat and whole grain bread is a pretty good lunch. The real truth is that pre-packaged deli meat has a massive amount preservatives and can provide you with about a third of your suggested sodium consumption for the day. This is going to be especially dangerous if you are at risk of contracting heart disease. Instead of buying the pre-packaged products, you need to instead use home cooked poultry or freshly sliced meat from your grocery store's deli counter. Sure these types of selections are more costly but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are lots of things that we think are better than others like choosing a whole wheat bagel each morning when the truth is that a bowl of cinnamon sprinkled oatmeal is a much healthier choice. Ask a medical professional which food items are right for you and then consume those. If you pay attention and are careful about which kind of food you let yourself eat, losing weight isn't going to be a terribly big deal.
